STANCHION MASTERS® PLANNING TOOLS
Stanchion Layout Planner
Measure your usable space and expected peak queue. Compare arrangements, then adjust every post and connection.
Create your space or choose a prefilled space, then customize it.
Add or adjust doorways, counters and objects using the tools beside the drawing.
Clicking the blue button creates your selected starting space and attempts a layout in one step. If the route cannot be validated, a clearly marked editable draft is shown. Confirm door locations, actual measurements, accessible clearances and site conditions before using a suggested queue.

Planning estimate only. This tool does not determine or certify ADA compliance, occupancy, fire-code compliance, required exit width, accessible door maneuvering clearance, turning space, local code, or physical site conditions. Confirm the final installation with the facility manager and qualified accessibility / fire-safety professional before use.

STANCHION MASTERS® ROPE PLANNING
Cabana, Deck & Hallway Rope Planner
Enter the exact straight-across opening measurement for each location. Openings often vary slightly, even when they look identical.
Measure from inside attachment point to inside attachment point, straight across. Measurements are saved as entered. Suggested nominal rope lengths are rounded to the nearest whole inch.
Spans over 10 feet use additional portable stanchions and multiple ropes. Rope lengths are nominal targets; actual swag varies with mounting hardware, fiber elasticity and installation adjustments.

Stanchion Layout Tips and Queue Planning Guide
Planning an effective queue begins with the space people actually use. Measure the usable floor area, entrances, service counters, furnishings, door swings, and routes that must remain clear. Build a floor plan, select retractable-belt or post-and-rope stanchions, and review the suggested arrangement before moving individual posts and connections into their final positions.
Recommendations for your expected attendance
Recommended clear aisle widths
- 36 inches minimum: typical continuous accessible walking-route clear width under the 2010 ADA Standards, subject to applicable exceptions and additional requirements. Measure between the edges of stanchion bases and other obstructions, not post centers.
- 48–60 inches: a useful planning allowance for a more comfortable public queue when space permits. This is a recommendation, not a universal legal requirement.
- 60 inches or more: consider at turning and passing points. An ADA-compliant circular turning space is at least 60 inches in diameter; some 180-degree turns require 42-inch approaches and 48 inches at the turn, or an applicable 60-inch alternative.
- Entrances and exits: preserve required clear door openings, maneuvering clearances and egress routes. Required egress widths are determined by applicable building and fire codes, not by this planner.
Change your setup as attendance changes
A permanent arrangement of post locations does not have to mean a permanent queue. Retractable belts could be connected to different receiver positions to open or close lanes, as long as the belts remain within their rated spans. Post-and-rope systems could be reconfigured by moving ropes to other posts or exchanging rope lengths. Optional dashed connections on the plan help illustrate alternate traffic-flow scenarios.
For a busy event, additional posts could extend a serpentine queue or separate entry and exit paths. For a quieter event, some posts could be removed and the remaining posts repositioned for a shorter, more direct route. Recalculate required quantities after every change. Keep accessible routes and emergency exits usable in every configuration.
Equipment ordering reminders
- Retractable belts: the planner limits connections to 10 feet and rounds the purchase estimate up to the next even number of posts because they are sold in pairs. Confirm actual belt specifications before ordering.
- Post and rope: select whole-foot rope lengths from 2 through 8 feet. Review the separate list of required rope lengths and quantities, including optional connections.
- Base clearance: each stanchion base is represented as a 14-inch-diameter circle. Allow for its physical footprint when deciding aisle and queue widths.
- Before installation: confirm onsite dimensions, service-counter access, local occupancy and fire rules, accessibility, and actual hardware compatibility.
